More Issues With National Weather Service Storm Warnings

There are two points to make today.

1. Both yesterday and Sunday, I heard from people who upset by the position I am taking regarding President Trump's and DOGE's budget cuts in atmospheric science. One referred to the current tornado warning issues being due to DOGE.

The problem with that hypothesis is that tornado warning accuracy began decreasing rapidly after 2011. Below is a screen capture from the NWS's own figures which you can view for yourself here (right hand column shows whether the NWS's own goals were met up to the latest fiscal year for which the data is complete).
The sad story of "not met" continues every year beyond 2016. DOGE has nothing to do with this.

2. Yesterday, Matthew Cappucci of the Washington Post was watching the hail storms in the West Virginia area and was not pleased with the NWS's performance. That's his own warning below.

Earlier, he wrote:

His concern was warranted: hail up to tennis ball-sized fell.

When a tornado warning was issued....
So far, no tornado is known to have occurred.

The NWS has real issues and it putting its limited resources into the wrong things. It needs to stop its "be all things to all people" culture.
