Updated Winter Storm Forecast, 9:30pm CST

After a quick look at the new data this evening, I believe the forecast is still good. There may be light amounts of freezing rain in north central Texas as far south as Waco. It will not be enough to cause power outages but -- if it occurs -- it will make roads very slick.

The snow amount forecasts haven't changed. I believe DFW will receive 1-3" with heavier amounts as you go northeast. I-30 will become a mess for its entire route.

--- original forecast still valid ---

Here are the latest NWS winter weather warnings and watches as of 3:15pm
Note: the white "hole" in southwest Texas will be filled in with a purple winter weather advisory for 1-3 inches of snow.

Color codes:
  • Pink = winter storm warning
  • Dark green = winter storm watch
  • Purple = winter weather advisory
  • Bright green = ongoing flood warning
  • Dark blue and bright turquoise = freeze warnings.
As expected, the winter weather advisories have been extended to the north.

Snowfall Amount Forecasts
In general, snowfall amounts have been increased and shifted a bit to the east. Given that south of I-40 snow removal is often slow, please consider this in your travel plans. This would also apply to flights to/from and through (changing planes) in Atlanta. This also applies, in a lesser extent, to flights through DFW International and Love Field in Dallas.

Freezing Rain Amount Forecasts
While freezing rain on the Edward Plateau is probably not heavy enough to cause significant power outages, the freezing rain over Texas and the Ark-La-Tex is enough to make roads very hazardous.

Effects of This Storm
I'd like you to think of the above as an experiment. The impacts index underplayed the ice storm this past weekend (there are 69,000 homes and businesses still without power = 210,000 people) with some still will be without power for several more days. That said, the fact that some areas of Arkansas and Texas get into the "extreme" category means that planning for this storm should be completed by tonight as there precipitation will start in Texas during the day Thursday (tomorrow).
