NOAA's Reaction to the New Administration?
So far, the reaction to my suggestions for the future of the National Weather Service and NOAA (here) have been well-received.
This week, I have become aware of others who have similar thoughts about the future of the National Weather Service (NWS) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Whether those will become public is unknown at this point. But, I do know for certain there are some on Capitol Hill that are unhappy with NOAA as it stands today as well as numerous people in the atmospheric science field.
So, when this popped up on Twitter a little while ago, I thought the timing was curious.
You can find the Podcast and a transcript here. Almost all of it is about weather which surprised me. Is NOAA feeling pressure about its stewardship of the NWS? Dr. Spinrad, NOAA's administrator, is an oceanographer who has not spent a lot of time talking about the NWS in the past. It wouldn't surprise me to suddenly find a lot of love expressed for the National Weather Service by NOAA in the next few weeks. Don't be fooled. The NWS and most of all America would be far better off if the NWS was severed from NOAA as described at the pink link in the first sentence above.
