Two Types of Waterspouts
The Post and other publications are having difficulties reconciling the reports of a waterspout and its role in sinking the Bayesian.
That's because there are two types of waterspouts...
- One occurs during the day, without a thunderstorm. They form over water and dissipate quickly when over land. That is the more typical waterspout.
- The second, more dangerous, type is simply a tornado that moves over or happens to form over land. Generally, these are significantly stronger than the typical waterspout.
Coincidently, on June 17 I posted a video that shows a tornado forming on the shore and attacking boats when it quickly moved over water.
This tragedy should reinforce that thunderstorms and boating do not mix. Besides waterspouts, lightning, squall lines, and downbursts are all major hazards.
