7:55pm Update: Flooding Rains and Possible Tropical Storm

Five to six inches of rain forecast between now and 1am over southwest Kansas and the Oklahoma Panhandle.

-- original post, still valid, below --

We continue to have two areas where flooding rains may occur
during the next two and a half days.

The areas with red are where 3-4 inches of rain are forecast to fall. Within the purple envelope in Kansas, there is a possibility of some isolated 4 inch amounts. Generally speaking, much of Kansas to the west of the Flint Hills is still drier than desirable, so I don't believe there will be major flooding.

As to the area of heavy rain from eastern Nebraska to northern Missouri, I believe there will be minor flooding.

New! There is a risk of tornadoes in this area. Click here

Southern Area - Potential Tropical Storm Alberto

The blue line near the coasts of northeast Mexico and south Texas is a tropical storm warning. The amber area is where there are currently tropical storm force (40-50 mph) winds. Wind gusts to 55 mph are possible as the storm approaches the coast.

However, the primary threat from potential tropical storm Alberto is flooding rains.
The amber areas in southern Texas are forecasts of 7 to 10 inches of rain which should be sufficient to cause flooding. "Considerable" flooding is expected in this area.

To prepare, it is a good idea to have a "go kit" which includes the information you would need for a few days if you have to evacuate your home. This applies especially if you live in an area known to be flood-prone. Remember, an evacuation notice for flooding can occur at night. It might include a couple of changes of clothes, prescription drugs, and other vital info. I would fill my car with fuel this afternoon and I would get some extra cash from the ATM.
