Update on Midwest and Southwest Floods

Image
Legend It has been a relatively wet ten days in the Southwest and there is the potential for flash flooding in the region this week. In the Midwest, major flooding continues. Unfortunately, additional moderate rainfall amounts are forecast to occur the next five days (below).

News Update: Record Hurricane - Cat 4 Hurricane Beryl

Image
Hurricane Beryl - A Record Storm Note: the latest forecast is below but confidence is extremely low past Thursday. Beryl now has 130 mph sustained winds and is a Cat 4 storm. While I'm sure others are checking, I believe this is a record for a storm location this early in the season. Hurricane warnings are in effect for the Windward Islands.

We do not provide routine coverage of hurricanes until they are 5 days or a little farther from the United States.  However, I did want to let you know that Beryl is out there and if you have plans to go to Cancun or nearby, you will want to keep up on the forecasts.

Anyone See Anything Wrong With This?

The "Well, Duh!" Headline of 2024

Image
The New York Times  is finally stating what has been obvious to everyone but the climate alarmists the past 20 years. You could have read that on this blog as recently as April 4 . Or, as early as November, 2014 . Or, 18 times  in between. The first story that sea level rise claims may be misleading was in November, 2009 , during the first week of the blog. Or, you could have read it on WattsUpWithThat or other blogs attempting to cover the climate in an accurate manner.  Below is a photo of one of the Maldives web cams at 5:05pm Maldives time today. The island doesn't look underwater to me. Long live the Maldives! And, don't expect Big Climate to apologize for all of the misinformation since 1989.

Look at All of the Thunderstorms! Oh, Wait!

Wind energy is a bad joke for many incontrovertible reasons such as high cost and grid destabilization. But, there is one less important reason: it makes weather radar much more difficult to interpret, especially for the public.  Look at this image.  Here is a radar image showing what appears to be a strong thunderstorm and a couple of areas of heavy rain. Here's the same image, at the same time, with the wind farms circled. Radar beams can be "bent" by temperature inversions which causes them to sense things near the ground. The wind farms, when they first appear, look like developing thunderstorms. The last thing we need in meteorology is more confusion among the members of the public.

America Held [Radar] Hostage - Issue Appears to Be Resolved

Image
6:45am Thursday It appears all radar data is flowing properly.  ---- We are now 51 hours into the NWS's major data outage.  If interested, my initial report is here .  6:30pm Wednesday We have terrible flooding in progress in the Midwest, unwarned tornadoes less than 24 hours ago and the NWS still can't make its full suite of radar and other data available. And, they are not even working the issues on a 24-hour basis*! Those of us who use (and pay for!) professional-level radar like RadarScope can still get it.  But, the amateur radar is often used by law enforcement, fire departments, and other decision-makers is still either unavailable or sporadic 51-hours into the outage, per the above message. Other meteorological data is unavailable. And, recall that we went through this just this past April (although the duration was not as long).  This evening, I am not going to discuss the problem of amateurs with radar "playing meteorologist" (see the story of the fatal In

Town Destroyed -- National Weather Service Misses Another Strong Tornado

Image
Photo from Grant County Sheriff, Michael Rath The tiny town of Whitman, Nebraska is in ruins today after being struck by a tornado yesterday evening. Incredibly, the National Weather Service did not issue a tornado warning until after the town was destroyed, in spite of storm chasers and others calling to tell them a tornado was in progress.   Damage photos by Jeremy Holthus While there were earlier radar indications to issue a tornado warning, the radar clearly showed a tornado threat at 7:33pm MDT (all times Mountain).  Per the Sheriff's press release, it appears the tornado touched down about 7:30pm.  A ddition -please see the comment at the bottom of this piece.  At 7:41pm, a distinct hook echo (circled) formed on a rotating supercell that was moving south southeast. Had I been working the warning desk at WeatherData, Inc., unquestionably I would have issued a warning at this point, regardless of whether I had yet heard from chasers in the field. The radar map does not display
