Wichita Eagle |
After the 1991 Wichita - Andover Tornado, even though we had done an outstanding job providing advance forecasts and
warnings of that day's storms, the team suffered from "survivor's guilt" (now called PTSD). Seventeen were killed in that storm but, per a Centers for Disease Control Study, we saved about 70 lives that day. Worsening the situation, the local media blamed meteorologists for the deaths, for which the newspaper has since apologized.
I know of other situations where meteorologists have suffered from PTSD after warning of tornadoes or after conducting storm surveys.
So, this
new paper pertaining to mental issues and tornadoes may be useful to meteorologists along with medical professionals in tornado-prone areas.
