"Billion Dollars Disasters" -- NOAA's Propaganda

This is a topic about which I have written over and over. NOAA's "billion dollar disasters" are nothing but global warming propaganda -- they certainly have nothing to do with science. I appreciate Dr. Pielke writing about how awful these lists are. Roger writes:

Eleven years ago this week, I wrote my first critique of the so-called “billion-dollar disaster” count promoted by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The dataset and how it is used represents one of the most spectacular abuses of science you will ever see — and obviously so, it is not even close. Yet, the U.S. government and big media outlets continue to promote the dataset, while experts who know better stand by silently.

He is absolutely correct when he says, "experts who know better stand by silently." Perhaps part of the silence is induced by the fact that many of those same experts get funding from NOAA. As President Eisenhower warned us in his Farewell Address:

The prospect of domination of the nation's scholars by Federal employment, project allocation, and the power of money is ever present and is gravely to be regarded.

Of course, I don't receive any money now, nor have I ever, from the Federal government. So, I am free to write whatever I wish. And, I have been discussing these ridiculous lists from the beginning. As I wrote in 2019:

What NOAA does is string together days worth of unrelated events, totals up some odd numbers, and calls the result a "billion dollar disaster." Some examples from that posting:

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) used to be an organization that did tremendous science and was worthy of great respect. Unfortunately, like so much of the scientific establishment, it has been corrupted by global warming: by far, the biggest gravy train in the history of atmospheric science. 

The corruption of science and engineering by global warming is harming our society in countless ways. Our electric grid is far less reliable and more expensive. Insurance rates are higher. The scientific method has been corrupted by computer models. Dishonest news coverage about global warming has led to dishonest coverage of many other topics, including the coverage of COVID, masking, and the vaccines. 

I am hoping that the next Administration, regardless of party, will appoint someone to head NOAA that has the integrity and guts to stop this and other global warning-related nonsense.
