Latest Palmer Drought Index

Here is the latest Palmer Drought Index map which is based on data through September 7.

For comparison, here is the Palmer as of May 31.
The Pacific Coast from northern California to Washington has gotten wetter and the drought has significantly eased in the Southwest.

The biggest concern is the worsening drought in the winter wheat belt. Planting in an average year extends from now to mid-October and conditions are just too dry with little indication of the drought breaking.

The 7-day rainfall forecast does show some rain in Kansas but dry condition in Texas, Oklahoma and eastern Colorado and New Mexico.
I'll keep you informed as this situation evolves, but -- right now -- it looks like the 2023 winter wheat crop may not get off to an optimal start.
