As We Approach Tornado Season 2021, Two Essential Books
In spite of the cold gripping much of the United States,
we are only a few weeks from tornado season.
The first is Warnings: The True Story of How Science Tamed the Weather. A tiny sample of the highly favorable reviews it has received:
The second is the story of the catastrophic Joplin Tornado of 2011, the worst in 64 years, When the Sirens Were Silent.
The Joplin Tornado killed 161. What made the death toll so high was the rare failure of the warning system that awful Sunday. The Washington Post calls Sirens an "important read." Understanding what went wrong in Joplin is critical to insuring it never happens again. There are also specific tornado safety suggestions for home, school and the office.
