June Bacon-Bercy, Rest in Peace
Native Wichitan June Bacon-Bercy has passed away at the age of 90. June was a true pioneer. She was the both the first black and the first woman meteorologist on television.
June was also the first woman to obtain the American Meteorological Society's Television Seal of Approval. June also worked for a time at AccuWeather in its State College, PA office (AccuWeather's Enterprise Solutions' office is here in Wichita). A complete obituary is here.
I didn't know June as well as I would have liked but she was a great lady. She was amazing. She had to endure so much but she always did it with a smile and a great attitude.
As an aside, the second woman to receive AMS Television Seal of Approval, Virginia Bigler, worked with me at Wichita's KSNW-TV (then KARD-TV) in 1975-76.
