More Excessive Tests -- More Warning Desensitization
I don't know what is the reason behind the absurd ratcheting up of number of warning system tests in the Wichita area but it is out of control.
Less than two hours before this EAS (motto: "a solution in search of a problem") test, we had our Mondays at noon tornado siren test. These tests have become nearly daily which is far too much. That is not just my opinion. The term social scientists use is "warning fatigue."
Below are excerpts from the National Weather Service's study of the Joplin Tornado.
The point is that too many tests and false alarms desensitize people to genuine warnings.
We meteorologists and emergency managers know this to be true and yet we still generate all of these ridiculous tests. I don't get it.
