8:35am Saturday: Hurricane Irma Update

Let's get this out of the way. Irma changed direction a bit when I wrote the bulletin below but it wasn't "the turn." Because it has stayed near the Cuban coast its wind speed has come down a bit but it is still a very large and dangerous storm.

Of course, the question becomes, when does the turn occur? And, will it have time to strengthen again?

Power is out in parts of Miami-Dade as a result of the outer band winds last night and a tornado warning is out in the Miami area now. But, it is increasingly unlikely this will be "like Andrew" in the Miami area.

So, what to expect? The models now put Key West - Ft. Myers - Tampa in jeopardy. I'll check in with you later this morning.
