A necessary part of weather forecasting is the launch of weather balloons and their instrument packages. When the NWS in Midland, TX went to launch the evening balloon last week they found this little surprise.
Yes, that is a poisonous rattlesnake.
About 20 years ago, an NWS employee was attacked and killed by a polar bear in Barrow, Alaska.
So, thank you NWS. Fortunately, as Bob Dole would say, I have "an indoor job with no heavy lifting."
