Cold Wave: 4pm Update
These are the 3pm temperatures. Wichita, just ahead of the front, tied its record high for the date of 77°F.
It is now snowing in Denver. @DenverAirport tweeted the photo below. They were in the 60's a few hours ago.
In Minnesota, St. Augusta reports 16.5" of snow on the ground (with drifting) up to 4pm. At the Minneapolis airport, delays have improved to 3.5 hours, on average.
If the front has not arrived at your place, please consider:
- Filling up your car and putting your winter equipment (ice scraper, etc.) in for the season.
- Checking your furnace to make sure it is working properly.
- Disconnecting garden hoses.
- In some areas tomorrow morning temperatures will be warmer in the morning then when the kids are dismissed in the afternoon. Check the hourly temperature forecast and make sure your kids have proper clothing for the trip home from school.
Because I think we have pretty much gotten the word out, this is going to be the last of the 3-hour updates on the blog.
ADDITION 4:43pm: I-70 now closed in central Colorado west of Denver.
Below is a radar image showing the position of the front along I-35 from near Emporia to Wellington, KS then into north central Oklahoma. Temperatures drop about 20° very quickly behind the front along with northwest winds gusting to 40-45 mph.

From the Oklahoma Mesonetwork, a photo of the blowing dust as the front passed through the Oklahoma Panhandle.
CNN says this is a "bomb cyclone", so I hope we all survive. (sarcasm)
