RESPECT THE WHEAT!
As you no doubt have heard, Wichita State got its number one seed to the NCAA Tournament and will play Friday in St. Louis. Even cooler, Kansas State and KU will be playing in St. Louis this weekend as well. That does not occur on any routine basis because both of the other major Kansas basketball teams are afraid of playing WSU.
So, there will be a giant cheering section from the State of Kansas in St. Louis for the weekend. All will be furiously cheering for each other in what the NCAA calls the "second round," even though it will be the first game for each of these teams (on second thought, there will be a few Jayhawk fans that won't get it -- they're too worried about playing WSU later in the tournament).
We can pretty well assume Wichita State will win its first game. Kansas State has a tougher time against another KU, Kentucky. If K-State wins, Wichita State and KSU will play on Sunday -- fantastic.
Because they are in different parts of the bracket, even though they are all playing in St. Louis, the only way the Jayhawks and Shockers can meet is in the Final Four, again, fine with me!
So, with Kansas being the #1 wheat (always), #1 meat (always), #1 aircraft (always) and #1 basketball (this year) state, respect the wheat!
Two other things: Thanks to The Daily Beast for its link to this site to last year's description of WuShock. I wrote that article before the third round games of last year's NCAA Tournament when #9 WSU was facing #1 Gonzaga. Note I picked WSU in a huge upset. I wouldn't have done that if I had not been confident, just as I am confident they will do well this year.
Second, a factoid I noticed during the Selection Show on CBS. Seven of the original Big 8 teams made the tournament this year (only Missouri missed out). It is a shame that great conference has been broken up.
Enjoy March Madness!! We'll get back to meteorology tomorrow.
