U.S. Geography 101...
About once a year for various reasons I fly into Kansas City's airport rather than Wichita's. It is always dismaying to hear the flight attendant, as we pull off the runway onto the taxiway, "Welcome to Kansas." Ahh, wrong. Kansas City International Airport is in MISSOURI. See below (click to enlarge). That blue thing is the Missouri River. East of the Missouri River, you are in MISSOURI!
With the baseball's All-Star Game in KC MISSOURI tonight, it is amusing to read the tweets from the people at the Home Run Derby last night who thought they were in Kansas.
It is really alarming to hear pilots make that mistake!
Just as alarming to be asked if New Mexico is part of the United States, Mike!
ReplyDeleteHe're a humorous map of "America As Seen By A New Yorker." On the map, both Kansas and Missouri are labeled "one of the states that has Kansas City."

The map also has at least four states that "might be Nebraska," a couple of possible Montanas, and all of Illinois is (of course) "Chicago", aka "New York Jr."

Back in my newspapering days, an AP story came over the wire with a Kansas City dateline. It mattered, so I called AP to ask whether it was KCK or KCMO. "There are two of them?" It took a while to get the answer.
