Severe Weather Preparedness Week

This is National Severe Weather Preparedness Week March 12-16 and from Category 5 Hurricanes to F-5 Tornadoes being prepared is your best defense in surviving a disaster. With tornado season already starting in the South, here are the Tornado Safety Rules:

In a conventional home: Go to the basement and get under a sturdy table or stairwell. If you do not have a basement, get to the lowest floor in a small room such as a closet or bath in the center of the home. A bathtub offers extra protection. The more walls between you and the outdoors, the better.

In a mobile home:
Get out and move to a shelter building.

In an office building:
Get into a stairwell or interior hallway on as low a floor as possible.

In a car:
Get out, take shelter in a nearby sturdy building. If there is no place to take shelter, run away from the car and get into a ditch on the side of the road away from a tornado.

Church, shopping mall or school:
Move to a marked shelter area. If none is marked, get into a small closet, bathroom or another small place.

Keep a battery operated radio or tv available with fresh batteries. In sever weather situations, keep your cell phone fully charged. Be aware of what is going on.

  1. So I went to the NWS storm spotter training class this evening for Butler Co. Not a word was said about the upcoming changes to the tornado warnings that you have been reporting. What is the status of that? It would certainly seem like storm spotter meetings would be a good time to announce such things...

  2. Agree with you 100% Steve. The NWS has done a poor job with communications on this.
