Big freeze: 'difficult decisions' over road gritting lay ahead
The country is facing grit rationing and "difficult decisions" will soon need to be taken about which roads to grit amid dwindling supplies, Hilary Benn, the Environment Secretary, has warned.
As the country struggled to get to work on another bitterly cold day, and amid a nationwide ice warning from the Met Office, Mr Benn said: "We may face some difficult decisions about which roads are going to continue to be salted, because it looks as if the cold weather is going to last for quite some time yet.
"We've also ordered more supplies from abroad, but it will take a little time for those to arrive."
